Preparing Resin-Printed Model Car Parts for Paint

Follow these simple steps for the best finish on your 3D-printed resin model car parts.

1. Remove Supports

  • Clip support nubs with flush cutters
  • Trim small bumps with a hobby knife
  • Do not tear or twist supports

2. Wet Sand the Part

  • Start with 400–600 grit
  • Smooth with 800–1000 grit
  • Finish with 1500 grit
  • Always wet sand (safer + smoother)

3. Wash the Part

  • Use warm water + dish soap
  • Scrub gently with a soft brush
  • Rinse and air-dry completely

4. Fix Imperfections

  • Use glazing/spot putty for pits or scratches
  • Let dry, then sand smooth (800–1000 grit)

5. Degrease

  • Wipe with isopropyl alcohol
  • Keep fingers off afterward

6. Prime

  • Use Tamiya, Mr. Surfacer, or Filler Primer
  • Apply 2–3 light coats
  • Let dry 20–30 minutes between coats

7. Final Prep + Paint

  • Lightly sand primer (1500–2000 grit)
  • Your part is now ready for airbrush, lacquer, enamel, or acrylic paint
