Preparing Resin-Printed Model Car Parts for Paint
Follow these simple steps for the best finish on your 3D-printed resin model car parts.
1. Remove Supports
- Clip support nubs with flush cutters
- Trim small bumps with a hobby knife
- Do not tear or twist supports
2. Wet Sand the Part
- Start with 400–600 grit
- Smooth with 800–1000 grit
- Finish with 1500 grit
- Always wet sand (safer + smoother)
3. Wash the Part
- Use warm water + dish soap
- Scrub gently with a soft brush
- Rinse and air-dry completely
4. Fix Imperfections
- Use glazing/spot putty for pits or scratches
- Let dry, then sand smooth (800–1000 grit)
5. Degrease
- Wipe with isopropyl alcohol
- Keep fingers off afterward
6. Prime
- Use Tamiya, Mr. Surfacer, or Filler Primer
- Apply 2–3 light coats
- Let dry 20–30 minutes between coats
7. Final Prep + Paint
- Lightly sand primer (1500–2000 grit)
- Your part is now ready for airbrush, lacquer, enamel, or acrylic paint
